May 2019 Newsletter – Dental Tips for Mom

For Expecting & New Moms:

Whether you are expecting or are a new mom you can expect to be getting a lot less sleep for a while. Less sleep can impact bone health and tissue regeneration which can have an impact on overall health. For expecting moms, mild to moderate gum disease is common during this time, so regular checkups are extra important. In fact, some dental insurances may cover an additional cleaning for expecting moms.

Some gift ideas for expecting and new moms: Help mom to get some restful sleep with a sleep mask. Also, remember to give the priceless gift of peace and quiet to help mom relax and sleep well!

For Moms with older children

A lot of moms wonder where the time goes as their children grow so quickly and there are a lot of activities and school functions to cram into just one day. With all the time and energy spent on raising children, moms often put their own health needs aside and delay things like regular checkups with the doctor and dentist. For moms that are always on the go, we suggest finding ways to make it as easy as possible to maintain good home oral health care. One way to make oral health fun in the home is to download the BrushDJ App and dance with your children while brushing your teeth. We also strongly encourage even the busiest of moms to take time for themselves and schedule regular dental checkups.

Some gift ideas for moms on the go: A travel cosmetic case filled with dental health goodies like a travel toothbrush, floss picks and toothpaste. Since alone time can be hard for moms to come by, a relaxing bath set, or shower speaker could also be a good way to help mom take some time for herself to relax.

For “Experienced” Moms & Grandmothers:

Adults in general are living longer and more active lives, which means it is even more important for older women to care for their smiles and their bodies. Stress, sleep and diet all have an impact on oral health as well as whole-body wellness. Bone loss often appears first in the jaw, and senior women may have dental work such as implants, partials or dentures that needs regular care. Because of this, we encourage regular dental checkups remain important throughout life.

Some gift ideas for “Experienced” Moms & Grandmothers: An electric toothbrush, which can remove more plaque than conventional brushes and is still gentle on dental work. If you have a tech-savvy mom or grandma, a tablet or smartphone may be a good gift for them and there are a lot of dental health apps that you can download for them!

We would like to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to our patients, friends and family!
